At age 5 Arcadius was named co-emperor by his father, Theodosius I. He became Eastern Emperor upon Theodosius’s death in A.D. 395, sharing power with his younger brother, Honorius, in the West. He was a weak, possibly disinterested emperor, easily manipulated by his wife and various advisers. But then again, he didn’t really live long enough to become anything else. Return |
