RIC 22 28mm, 19.8g. Balbinus was already in his seventies when he was appointed co-emperor, along with Pupienus, by the Senate after the deaths of Gordian I and Gordian II. The brief reign of the co-emperors was marred by suspicion, mutual fears of assassination, jealousy and constant quarrelling. After ruling about three months, the praetorian guards decided that they had had enough of both emperors and assassinated them both. Return |
