Faustina I Augusta, A.D. 138-141 Silver Denarius Rome mint, A.D. 141-161 Obv: DIVA FAVSTINA Rev: AVGV-STA - Vesta, veiled, standing left, holding simpulum in right hand and palladium in left. RIC 368 17mm, 2.9g. Faustina, Sr. was the wife of Antoninus Pius and the mother-in-law of Marcus Aurelius (and also his mother, technically, since Antoninus Pius adopted him). She shared the throne with her husband but died after reigning just three years: a great, tragic love story; his devotion to her was so great that he minted coins in her honor for many years after her death.
