Gallienus Augustus, 253-268 Silver Double Denarius Asia Minor mint, A.D. 255-256 Obv: IMP C P LIC GALLIENVS P F AVG Rev: IOVI CONSERVATORI - Emperor with spear, receiving globe from Jupiter, on right, leaning on scepter Wreath in field RIC 440 21mm, 4.5g. A much under-appreciated Emperor, Gallienus began the slow, difficult process of rebuilding a splintered, disintegrating empire during some of the most difficult times of Rome’s 1,000 year history. The fact that he was successful in many of his campaigns points to his strength as a general. Despite the constant crises that marked his tenure, including the capture of his father and co-emperor Valerian by the enemy king Shapur I of Persia, he still found time to pursue various cultural and intellectual events–pursuits that aroused suspicion and contempt among his military officers and eventually led to his murder.
