Julian II

One of the last members of the Constantinian dynasty, Julian II was a philosopher who shocked the Roman Empire by announcing his paganism after his acclamation as Augustus by his troops. He attempted to reverse the influence of Christianity on the government and restore traditional Roman paganism as the favored religion, but his reign was too brief to have any lasting impact. He died of wounds received in battle during the war against the Persian Empire.
