Maximian (Herculius)

Maximian was appointed junior emperor by Diocletian. He is remembered today mostly for his relentless persecution of the Christians and his resentment of his coerced co-retirement with Diocletian. He later made several attempts to regain the throne, but was never successful for very long.

Note: This coin was probably minted around the time of Diocletian's coinage reform. Although RIC, vol.VI, lists this coin as having its mint mark in the exergue, coins from this series actually have the marks in the lower field, as this example shows.
