Nerva was declared emperor by the Roman senate after the assassination of Domitian. Already 65 years old at the time of his appointment, he was considered weak and inconsequential by the military, but his designation of Trajan as heir proved widely popular. He is remembered today as the first of the “5 good emperors,” and his reign is often cited as the beginning of Rome’s “Golden Age.”
