VXXI in exergue RIC 448 22mm, 3.4g. Numerian and his brother, Carinus, ascended to the throne after the death of their father, Carus. Of retiring, reflective temperament, he was not well suited to the military imperatives of the times. He was eventually murdered by Arrius Aper, his praetorian prefect, who tried to conceal his death from the soldiers accompanying them. After several days, however, the stench of his dead corpse undid Aper’s subterfuge. Return |
