Philip II was appointed Caesar, and then
co-Augustus, by his father, Philip I (“the Arab”), while still very
young. This was no favor, as their reign was beset by unrest, invasions
and numerous attempts at usurpation in the provinces. They both
eventually died in battle trying to suppress the rebellion led by their
successor, Trajan Decius.
