Pupienus Augustus, A.D. 238 Silver Denarius Rome mint, A.D. 238 Obv: IMP C M CLOD PVPIENVS AVG Rev: P M TR P COS II P P - Felicitas, standing, facing left, holding caduceus and scepter. RIC 6 19mm, 3.3g. Pupienus had had a long and distinguished military career when he was appointed co-emperor, along with Balbinus, by the Senate after the deaths of Gordian I and Gordian II. The brief reign of the co-emperors was marred by suspicion, mutual fears of assassination, jealousy and constant quarrelling. After ruling about three months, the praetorian guards decided that they had had enough of both emperors and assassinated them both. Return |
