Severina Augusta A.D. 274-275 Billon Antoninianus Siscia mint Obv: SEVERI-NAE AVG Rev: CONDORDIAE M-ILITVM - Concordia, standing left, holding two ensigns XXI in exergue; S in right field RIC 13 22mm, 4.1g. Ulpia Severina was the wife of the emperor Aurelian. Little is known about her except what can be gleaned from her coins. Apparently there were coins minted with her image after her husband's death. Because of this, many scholars suggest that she may have reigned as Augusta for a while after her husband's death, until the Senate could confirm Tacitus as his successor. If this is correct, then she is the only woman to reign as sole empress during the entire history of the Empire. Return |
