Severus Alexander Caesar, A.D. 221-222 Augustus, A.D. 222-235 Silver Denarius Rome mint, A.D. 222-228 Obv: IMP C M AVR SEV ALEXAND AVG Rev: ANNONA AVG - Annona, standing, facing left, holding corn ears over modius (at feet) in right hand and cornucopia in left RIC 133 19mm, 2.7g. Severus Alexander was proclaimed emperor at the age of 13, after the murder of his cousin and adoptive father, Elagabalus. His reign was just and peaceful for the first nine years, even if he did rule in the shadow of his mother, the strong-willed Julia Mamaea. Later unrest and indecisive victories in the eastern and northern frontiers caused his army to doubt his military abilities, and both he and his mother were murdered by his troops. Return |
