Valens was appointed by his brother, the emperor Valentinian I, as emperor of the eastern half of the Empire. He was mean-spirited and only marginally competent, and his economic exploitation of Gothic immigrants eventually led to their rebellion and his ignoble defeat and death at the Battle of Adrianopolis.
