The four-year-old Valentinian II was proclaimed emperor when his father, Valentinian I, died in A.D. 375. He reigned mostly in title only, as he was subjected to continual domination from, at first, his mother and court advisers and, later, by Theodosius the Great. His reign was relatively uneventful except that it marked the beginning of the succession of weak, puppet Western emperors that continued until the collapse of the Western Empire a century later.
