Vitellius ruled for eight months during the “year of the four emperors,” a period of civil war in the Empire. Appointed as a general by Galba despite his lack of military skill, he became emperor upon the suicide of Otho but was quickly abandoned by his troops when pressured by rebel forces. He is known today more for his gambling and gluttony that for any impact on history.
