Outdoor Discoveries

Zohar found a beautiful snow quartz crystal.

Nice specimen, Zohar. What an exciting discovery!

Ascher found this nest:

Here is what he had to say about it: "We found this nest empty and put it back in the tree. Two weeks later it was still empty so we kept it and put some empty eggs back in it for show."
Any guesses what type of bird made this nest?

Morah Yael, our art teacher, found this beautiful luna moth on her screen:

She asked if it was female or male. I didn't know, so I looked online and found this information on a web site by Deb Platt called TrekOhio:

"The male has wide, luxuriant antennae, while the female has narrow, spindly little things.
"

I also found this this image on a website called BugGuide:

So Morah Yael sent us a closeup of the moth's antenna:

What do you think, everyone? Male or female?

Zohar was digging in her garden and was excited to find an unusual rock. She sent us some photos of it.  She says that it has mica in it.

Sure looks like there's a lot of mica in that rock. But it doesn't look like any rock I've seen in this area before. I wonder if it was brought here by a glacier during the last ice age. What does everyone else think?

Thank you for sending us these photos, Zohar.

Alexandra and Chloe spent some time outdoors the other day. They found a garter snake! Here's a photo of Alex holding the snake and a turtle that she found:

Alex also found a turtle on a hike at Rockefeller State Park Preserve.
I've been assured that both animals were promptly returned to the wild after they had their pictures taken.
