Student Plant-Sprouting Experiments

Harris found these onions growing in his refrigerator.
Onions
Self-growing onions! Pretty amazing. Or maybe it's just a really special refrigerator? Thanks for sending us the photo, Harris.

Sam wrote that he has planted carrots, radishes, onions, beets and kale.
He also said that he has asparagus beginning to sprout, Here's a photo:

And here is a close up of the asparagus in case you can't see it very well in the first photo:asparagusCU

Have you ever eaten fresh asparagus, Sam? I wonder if you like it as much as I do.

Josh is attempting to grow some scallions and romaine lettuce.

Here's a photo of his scallions after 5 days:
scallions
That's a lot of growth for just 5 days! I hope you will keep us updated, Josh.
This is his setup for his romaine lettuce experiment:
Romaine
This photo is from Day 2 of his experiment. Lettuce know how this turns out, Josh (groan).

Sam cut the bottom off of a bunch of romaine lettuce and put it in water. He sent some "Before" and "After" photos of his experiment.

Here is his initial setup:
Lettuce before
And here is what happened:
Lettuce after
Fresh romaine! I hadn't thought of trying this with lettuce. What a great idea! You don't have go to the grocery and risk spreading COVID-19 whenever you want fresh letuce if you grow your own like this. Thanks for sharing these photos with us, Sam!

Send photos of any sprouting experiments that you have tried to gsimonelli@leffellschool.org and I will add them to our plant-sprouting gallery.
